A SAFE HAVEN

Discovery House provides safe housing and essential support for families with children who are leaving domestic violence as they transition out of short-term emergency shelters and are referred to us for longer-term support.

Each year, we house hundreds of families in our secure apartment complex, as well as through our Community Housing Program (CHP) in affordable rental properties throughout the city. Families who come to our programs typically stay within our shelter for about a year, and receive roughly a year of support as they transition into the community as well.

The Discovery House shelter is located in Calgary, Alberta, and contains 19 individual and furnished apartments at an undisclosed location. It has a double-locked door, 24-hour security, secure underground parking, laundry rooms on each floor, and shared community spaces that include:

  • A secure outdoor courtyard, with a playground, community garden, and seating area
  • A community room, called the Harvest Table Room,  where residents and staff can gather together for community events
  • A community kitchen
  • A safe and secure Child Development Centre staffed with child development workers, with toys, books, and craft supplies
  • A small library with books for all ages
